Facebook as a Site for Semiotic Archeology: Chicana/o Studies Edition

I had posted about this picture before here on the textmex galleryblog--note that the version of the image reproduced here opposite has been digitally altered. The photo was part of a shoot taken back in the day to support Raza Unida Party work going down in Texas.  The photographer was Oscar Castillo and the woman pictured flashing the peace sign is Evelyn Alarcon.

This morning I linked to a story about Maria Cotera and the semiotic archeology project, Chicana por mi raza, on the Tex[t]-Mex Galleryblog facebook page--what followed, in real time, was an exercise in online, Zuckerberg-enhanced hermeneutics as the backstory for the picture emerged in conversation online.

Fascinating stuff.
