The BBC on Female Mexican Wrestlers

From the story:

Arena Coliseo in Mexico City is the oldest venue for lucha libre, dating back to the 1940s.

Families, couples and tourists fill the stadium, but female wrestlers only appear occasionally on the bill.

Women’s wrestling lost most of its official support 11 years ago. The main wrestling associations ruled that insurance and benefits were too costly.

For a short time, coverage of the luchadoras was banned from Mexican TV for being too violent, but was quickly reinstated.

update

Gustavo Arellano writes in to tip me to a National Geographic special on Bolivian women wrestlers!!!!

If comics and women wrestlers are your thing, a peek at this won't hurt.

My good friend and partner in crime, Kevin Gossett, of the Ex-Friends, sends me this snapshot of himself thrilling to the "seductive hallucinations" of a certain book by a certain author in Portland's amazing Powell's Books! A big gracias to them for being so well-stocked!

Get your hands on one of my books ...
