Cate Rangel, Xicanosmosis, Frida Kahlo

In Tex[t]-Mex, I write about Gilbert Hernandez's knowing illustrated biography of Frida Kahlo as a form of "xicanosmosis"--a process where the cultural forces from both sides of the border fuse and evolve/evoke (that essay is here: http://eyegiene.sdsu.edu/kahlosemiotic/index.html)

Cate Rangel's painting, though in a different key than Hernandez, moves with a similar semiotic cadence. A pretty remarkable portrait.
