It was great being on the radio again today, KPFK to be exact, with the infamous, amazing author of Ask a Mexican and, now, Taco USA--the one and only Gustavo Arellano. Yours truly, Bill Nericcio, the ringleader for The Tex[t]-Mex Galleryblog, was on the radio today with Chicano miscreant and OC Weekly columnist Gustavo Arellano. I come on at the 25-minute mark or so. The show is available directly from the KPFK Archive page or here as a podcast, stream, or download. The topic for today's show are the origins and the strategies implicit in the recent attacks on Ethnic Studies in Arizona and beyond.

ORIGINAL POSTING 9/8/09

Not since the days that I anchored the "What's Bothering Bill" lefty radio commentary show on the East Coast at WHUS, Storrs, Connecticut, have I been as excited as I am now. Working with Gustavo Arellano and KPFK, that indy shining tower of radio power in LA, I am going to be breaking out on the air this coming Tuesday with a radio version of Tex[t]-Mex: Seductive Hallucinations of the "Mexican" in America.

We are still working with the determination of day-laborers, sweating the details over the segments, but I can guarantee one of the pieces will go by the name BROWN IVORY TOWER, set interviews where I talk to some chingon or chingona Latina/o academic, wreaking intellectual havoc across the winsome, gringo laced plains of academe. UPDATE! I will be interviewing the Chicano King of Ohio State University's English Department, the one and only loco-genius Frederick Luis Aldama--Aldama's the author of YOUR BRAIN ON LATINO COMICS (UT PRESS, 2009)

Two weeks ago, Mr. Carton and Mr. Rossi started “Operation Rat a Rat/La Cucha Gotcha,” a listener-participation game that encourages people to turn in friends, neighbors and “anyone suspicious” to immigration authorities. They introduced the segment with mariachi music and set the campaign to end on May 5 (Cinco de Mayo), a well-known Mexican holiday. At the risk of stating the obvious, the phrase “La Cucha Gotcha” is meant to evoke the Spanish word for cockroach.
