Join us for a night of laughter, discussion, contemplation, beers and action-packed punchlines as we host the very funny and talented Gustavo Arellano and Bill Nericcio. This is a book reading you do not want to miss!

In one corner we have Gustavo Arellano - anaheim native and staff writer for the OC weekly - an alternative newspaper in Orange County and contributing editor to the LA Times Op/Ed pages. You may know him better as "that one mexican" from the ¡Ask A Mexican! column that won the 2006 Association of Alternative Newsweeklies award for the best column in a largecirculation weekly or you may have seen him throw down on the Today show, Nightline, NPR's On the Media, The Situation with Tucker Carlson or in The Colbert Report. Word on the street is that he also mows lawns.

And in the other corner we have William Anthony Nericcio, aka "Memo," aka "Bill", aka "El Post-Movimiento Chicano" aka "El Profe" de SDSU Department of English & Comp Lit, Chicana/o Studies & Center for Latin American Studies & Director of MALAS program (Master of Arts in Liberal Arts & Science). He infamous trajectory includes earlier postings at the University of Connecticut and Cornell where he underwent jedi training with mentors Carlos Fuentes, Gayatri Spivak and Henry Louis Gates Jr. among other ninjas.

You Know Where You Will Be on April 13nth!

Where will you be this MONDAY afternoon!???? You're going to jump on one of California's glorious interstate paved electro-glide highways and jet down to the Cal State Fullerton campus (ok, huevón, here's the map treasure trove) and get your nalgas to McCarthy (!) Hall 238 (campus map) at 4pm (sharp!) to treat yourself to the intellectual lucha libre of the century! It pits the author of Ask-A-Mexican and Orange County: A Personal Memoir against the scribe best known for Tex[t]-Mex and The Hurt Business: Oliver Mayer's Early Works PLUS [+]: The Screaming Gusanito de Califas, Gustavo "Si Voy a Perder" Arellano versus Guillermo Memo "El Macho de Tejas" Nericcio. Hide the children and call out the riot police, this to-the-death duel promises to have Southland tongues wagging as Arellano, the prince of tights, and Nericcio, the Lord-of-the-Ring, try to out-do each other with feats of clever, daring-do! The dynamic duo of Chicano camp and post-movimiento Mexicano wonders will also, get this, be reading from and signing copies of their books, so bring out the checkbooks and jars of pennies for some hot discounts. Arellano will be signing body parts as well, so bring along your sharpies!

City College, San Diego, CA visit on Tuesday, October 21st at 12:45pm.

Later today I am invading San Diego's City College at the invitation of the Puente Project and the Department of English for a public lecture on Tex[t]-Mex and "Mexican" representation entitled Naked Stereotypes!

City College and SDSU are closely allied in history and people with many of their graduates entering our various and sundry BA/MA/MFA tracks and many of our SDSU populating their ranks in kind. In any event, I am in debt to Oscar Preciado and Elva Salinas (another star literature.sdsu.edu alum)for making it happen! Here's the poster....

Stereotype deconstructionist Nericcio and metaphor mixing poet Riley form a potent one-two punch of Chicano linguistic insight. By breaking down cultural barriers and building multicultural alliances through their writing these two wordbending marvels bring a much needed ray of light to the latin literary world. Calaca Press and Mesa College are thrilled to collaborate by bringing these two genre defying scribes to campus in what will be a truly entertaining presentation and performance.

William Anthony Nericcio travels in various academic disguises, including American Lit scholar, Latin Americanist, Chicana/Chicano Studies devotee/vato, wannabe film studies guru, cultural studies maven, and, last but not least Laredense Tejano acolyte of deconstruction. His book Tex{t}-Mex: Seductive Hallucinations of the "Mexican" in America was published in 2007 by University of Texas Press.

Tomás Riley is a poet, writer, educator and a veteran of the seminal San Diego based Chicano spoken-word collective The Taco Shop Poets. His self-released CD Message From the New Forreal debuted in 2003 and his book mahcic: selected poems was published in 2005 by Calaca Press.

Bourgie Mexican Americans, the Newspaper and the Bigtime!

I don't know about you, but if you grew up in Laredo, Texas, the "bigtime" was having an appearance in Elizabeth Sorrell's society column in The Laredo Times's society page. But the really bourgie high society/sosiégate real deal always was going down across the river, in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, in their society pages, now called Rio, in El Mañana. Imagine my surprise then to find me and mi familia splashed across their pages! I can now die in peace!
