Jo Raquel Tejada, aka Raquel Welch, Immortalized at the SDSU Faculty Staff Lounge!

Readers of the Textmex Galleryblog know that we have devoted a fair amount of web-space to the pre-eminent Latina bombshell in American pop culture, Raquel Welch--go here for a roundup of postings.

But before Welch turned heads back in the day she was one of the most famous alums (though she did not graduate) of SDSU--back then she was Jo Raquel Tejada, or Tajeda (sic), as the SDSU Faculty Staff Club didactic has it, pictured here with Melvin Anderson, who seems to be biting himself in this snapshot!

San Diego State University Outreach

Last Friday I was lucky enough to be tapped by Berenice Gil (EOP) at SDSU to be one of the professors talking to local area high school students in their Freshman for a Day program--I had a blast working with the 35 or so students who were SDSU undergraduates for one afternoon on Montezuma Mesa! I hope that ALL of them decide to try to get to SDSU, or, if that does not work out, Harvard! The program is to your left; one group of Hoover High geniuses appears below:

Back in the Day; Nostalgia For/With Derrida

Careful readers of this blog may know that I carry a torch for our sadly departed guru of deconstruction, Jacques Derrida--evidence appears throughout Tex[t]-Mex as well as here, here, here, here, here, here, and, last but not least, here, a syllabus for my 1998 seminar on Borges and Derrida. Dr. Michael Mahin, one of the stars of that seminar, and now a lecturer for our department, just passed me a fragment/shard from that class, a collective letter we wrote to Jacques, then at Irvine, to come attend our colloquia.



He didn't show.

But we were not hard on the guy! We toasted him and as well as the shade of Jorge Luis "Georgie" Borges with love and good cheer; it was quite a seminar. It boasted the talents of now Dr. Mahin, Tomás Riley, late of the Taco Shop poets, Vincent Biondo, now a Professor of Philosophy at Fresno State, my old GTA Michael Leamy, Carlos Amador, now finishing his PhD at UT Austin, and a host of others. Gracias to Michael for pushing me into a vat of luxurious deconstructive nostalgia!

New Class Coming this Spring, 2009 @ SDSU

My Spring 2009 class at SDSU promises to be a pretty cool experiment; I am excited about teaching in the mornings again as I used to do for years. That and the subject matter of the class promise to keep things interesting during the Spring 2009 term!

One of the inspirations for this class!? Confession time: a memorable New Order show I attended in Austin, Texas back in the 1980s; in their honor, "Bizarre Love Triangle":

Naked Mirrors, Fractured Souls

I have not been adding to my online curiosity shoppe otherwise known as the Tex[t]-Mex Galleryblog much of late as I have been readying my Fall 2008 Literature and Film Seminar at San Diego State University--the title of this semester's showcase of talent (more on that below) is Naked Mirrors, Fractured Souls: An Introduction to Literature [and Film]. The class will fold together some of the ideas I have played with before but with some added twists and surprises. The big difference with this class is the cast of players/artists/fiends/geniuses who will be visiting our beautiful classroom PS 130 @ SDSU--these include Tomas Riley, Marisela Norte, Gustavo Arellano, Oliver Mayer and, maybe! Myriam Gurba and Culture Clash. It promises to be one of the better literary variety shows on the Left Coast! The class social networking site is here! Check it out!

My TA this semester is a rad graduate student in our program, Kevin Gossett. When he's not researching literature, Gossett hangs his hat with the Ex-Friends, an amazing local band--if you see them listed in City Beat or the Reader, go check them out! Their next show is on the 25th of September at the Beauty Bar.

Tomorrow the lid comes off of our semester-long adventure! Wish us luck.
