Nuyoricans Passing as Mexicans! New Tales of Latino Tranmogrification

Eduardo Santacruz, our Barcelona reporter, writes in from the peninsula:
So apparently Hollywood wants to make a movie about Cantinflas's life,
starring John Leguizamo. Did you hear about this?
As I was constantly mistaken as a son of the Boriqua when I lived in Ithaca, New York, I guess this is ironic justice!

  1. And yet another American playing a Mexican. Johnny Depp to play Pancho Villa. I know as an actor he's a chameleon but race is where I draw the line. At least he's learnibg Spanish.

  2. Thanks Maegan--he's half y half, Colombiano y Boriqua.... here's the skinny from wiki(it's got to be true)pedia:

Leguizamo was born in Bogotá, Colombia, to a Puerto Rican father, Alberto Leguizamo, and a Colombian mother, Luz.[1][2] According to Leguizamo, his paternal grandfather was of Italian descent[3] and his maternal grandfather was Lebanese.[4] He has also described himself as being of Amerindian and Mestizo heritage.[2][5] Leguizamo's father was once an aspiring film director and studied at Cinecittà but eventually dropped out due to lack of finances.[6] When Leguizamo was four years old, his family emigrated to the United States[7] and lived in various neighborhoods of Queens in New York City, including Jackson Heights.[2][8] Leguizamo attended the Joseph Pulitzer Middle School (I.S.145) and later the Murry Bergtraum High School. As a student at Murry Bergtraum High School, Leguizamo wrote comedy material and tested it out on his classmates. He was voted "Most Talkative" by his fellow classmates. After graduating from high school, Leguizamo enrolled at Long Island University C.W. Post Campus where he took theater classes.
