Lupe Velez Screenings Coming up on TCM

Stop the presses! Old Friend/Collaborator Kristy Rawson has breaking news:

"Hi: Wanted to pass this along: TCM is doing a Jimmy Durante day. Two of the four films he made with Lupe Vélez are scheduled to air on the 20th: Strictly Dynamite (1934) at 1:45pm est, and and Cuban Love Song (1931) at 9:15am est. The latter features the first major transnational Cuban jazz hit, "El Manicero" (The Peanut Vendor)... CLS was produced to exploit the popularity of "El Manicero" in the U.S., but the film caused big upset in Cuba. These are both historically interesting, problematic films. I don't think either of them is available on DVD yet... (although I could be wrong about that; some Lupe films have been recently released). best, Kristy

THE WORST OFFENDER stereotype for female Latinas in Hollywood, the maid? the domestic?

We do not dishonor our working class ancestors when we protest, we honor them because you could have easily done better.

Luchadores: Mexican Wrestlers Hit France

French shoe store Eram has launched a sweepstakes with the grand prize being a trip for two to Cancun, Mexico. Featured in its publicity posters promoting its brand E-You are five luchadores, with names such as "Rosa La Americana" and "Aldo el Dandino". These luchadores invite you to "Win the battle and spend a week in Mexico." The masked wrestlers are recognizable figures in Mexican sports culture; but what is interesting to note is the gesture and the slogan used with these images of luchadores. The pointing finger and the "I want E-you", allude to Uncle Sam, a figure representative of the United States government. In this context of cultural symbolism, the name "Rosa

La Americana" might exemplify the interlacing of the Mexican and American cultures as lived by many Mexicans residing in the U.S. Even in this ad found outside of the United States and Mexico, we can still perceive a trace of duality of the 'frenemies' Mexico and the U.S.
